OCTOBER STYLEWATCH Q&AOn Fall Fashion Trends

October 19, 2016

Fall is here! And after one of the hottest summers on record, it’s a welcome departure from those thousand-degree temps. So now, it’s goodbye flip flops and summer dresses, hello boots and cozy sweaters in all our favorite fall colors—like wine. Not only is it hot for fall, it’s our color of the month for October. And you’ll find it sprinkled throughout our October Capsule Collection (the fruits of our exclusive collaboration with Stylewatch!). We sat down with StyleWatch Fashion Director, Erin Sumwalt, to get the scoop.

What are the top fall trends?

At StyleWatch we are loving the mash-up of Pretty and Edgy. This trend is all about taking ultra-feminine pieces in delicate fabrics like lace and chiffon and styling them with tougher items like moto jackets, leather skirts, edgy jewelry and studded bags.

We are also crazy about the dark romance vibes we saw at the shows. This is a very romantic look that includes dark floral prints, textured fabrics and deep colored velvet clothing and accessories.

The bohemian trend is still going strong, but this fall we are seeing rich fabrics and sleeker styling. It’s a bit more refined and sophisticated than what we saw for spring.

Always an editor favorite, military inspired pieces are back again.

Clothing and accessories in all shades of blue and red were everywhere on the fall runways.

What’s a fall trend (or two) that anyone can pull off?

Anyone can pull off the Military trend. Adding a military element to your look is easy. You never want to look costume-y, or as if you are wearing a uniform. The key to making this trend work for you is choosing a military-inspired item that works back to the pieces in your wardrobe. A navy blue, structured jacket or coat with metallic buttons is always a good investment because it’ss a classic and will always look chic.

If the Military trend is not your thing, a simple way to update your look for fall is by incorporating shades of blue or red into your wardrobe.

WHAT WERE YOU MOST EXCITED TO SEE DURING NY FASHION WEEK?
Attending the shows during fashion week is exciting! I always know that I will be inspired by what established designers as well as new up-and- coming talent present during the week.

HOW DO THOSE LOOKS TRANSLATE FOR THOSE OF US WHO AREN'T MODELS?
You don’t have to be a model to wear the most popular looks of the season. You also don’t need to wear a trend head-to-toe. Instead, try incorporating pieces into your wardrobe that fit with your personal style and body type, and that make you feel comfortable and confidant.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PIECES FROM THE OCTOBER CAPSULE COLLECTION?

This collection is my personal favorite! There are so many strong pieces I look forward to wearing.

The Paneled Faux Calf Hair Satchel is the perfect updated work tote. I will wear the Dark Wine Twist Lock Wrap Bracelet layered on my wrist with the Classic Infinity Bangle.

I wear scarves almost every day in the fall and will definitely be sporting the Confetti Plaid Wrap with all my favorite chunky knits. I am OBSESSED with the Boxy Colorblock Crossbody Bag because it is so cute and versatile and can be worn with or without the strap.

IF WE DON'T HAVE ANYTHING WINE IN OUR WARDROBE NOW, WHERE DO WE START?
The easiest way to try out any trend is by beginning with an accessory.

WHAT ARE SOME FALL TRENDS THAT LOOK BEST IN WINE?
Wine is such a versatile shade that it can be treated like a neutral. Wine-colored accessories play well with just about every trend this season.

WILL ANY WINE PIECES CARRY OVER TO SPRING?
Because wine-colored accessories work well with an array of colors, you will be able to carry them into your spring wardrobe. Think of wine as your new go-to hue, an instant update.

There you have it. Gorgeous and wildly romantic, wine is a color that’s universally flattering. It looks dramatic with navy, modern with camel or chocolate, and dreamy with pops of pink. This season, you simply can’t overdue this rich, burgundy hue!
